Empire of the Sun Essay

One of the many themes in ‘Empire of the Sun’ is growing up. At the beginning of the book Jim is an optimist, but throughout the length of the book he is transformed, and by the end he has a more realistic view of things. The reader is shown how Jim grows up, through this transformation, and by the end of the novel it is clear that Jim has changed by the way his personality and approach to life has altered. As a young child, Jim has seen some of the devastating results of the war, but seems to be detached from them. One of the first examples that show how lucky he is, is when he asks Vera where her parents lived. When she replies, ‘They live in one room, James’, Jim found this inconceivable, demonstrating how spoilt he is. Completely absorbed in his own privileged world, he spends his days riding his bicycle around the city, dreaming of being a fighter pilot like the Japanese pilots he sees flying overhead. After he thought he had provoked the Japanese attack, by shining the torch out of the window to the Japanese ships, it is illustrated how ignorant Jim is when the author tells us that, ‘He decided not to tell his mother that he had started the war. ‘ On pages 64 – 65 we are invited to infer that Jamie is still a child as we are told his reaction to the talcum powder on the floor. Jim thinks that his mother has been dancing a tango, which we know to have been a struggle; by the way we are told that it â€Å"seemed far more violent than any tango he had ever seen. † He is also portrayed as childish by the way he rides his bike around the house on page 67. The quote, ‘they seemed much younger than Jim, but in fact both were more than a year older,’ from the beginning of chapter 15, signifies that in the short time between leaving Shanghai, and arriving at the detention centre, Jim has already begun growing up. The words, ‘how much he had changed,’ on page 153, also demonstrate that Jim himself was beginning to recognise that he was growing up. By the end of chapter 20, Jim ‘could no longer remember what his parents looked like. ‘ At this point, we can see that Jim’s experience has definitely made him older and further away from his parents, so much, it seems, that he cannot remember what they looked like. Quotes like, ‘a more adult eye’, ‘no longer cared’, ‘unexpected erection’ and ‘Kimura†¦ had once been a child as he himself had been before the war’ give the impression that Jim is graduating from ‘The University of Life’ – or he is growing up from his experience. According to Ballard, Jim’s ‘first adult act’ was when he pushed his suitcase into the river. He later regrets this, as he could have sold the contents, but still, it was his first adult act – the turning point in his life from childhood to a mature adolescent. As the book draws to a conclusion, it becomes clear that Jim has grown up. When he is reunited with his parents he realises that ‘his mother and father had been through a different war,’ showing that he was grown up and less dependant on his parents. He is also older and wiser, and realises how patient China have been, and he thinks that ‘One day China would punish the rest of the world, and take a frightening revenge. ‘ By the end of the book we have a full picture of Jim’s difficult childhood. We can see that he has changed from the spoilt child, who goes to fancy dress parties in the middle of a war, and who can’t possibly believe that someone could live in a room the size of his dressing room, to a young adult who has graduated from the ‘University of Life’, and who now realised that China would one day take a huge revenge. This change shows the reader that although thought of as a war novel, ‘Empire of the Sun’ is actually a Rites of Passage novel, and the war is just the time and place in which the story is set. Krispy Kreme Swot Analysis

I. INTRODUCTION Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (KKD) is an international retailer of high-quality sweet treats, including its signature hot Original Glazed ® doughnut. It began as a small bakery in Winston Salem, NC on July 13, 1937. Since then, the company has built a global reputation for serving the highest-quality doughnuts and great tasting coffee. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is part of the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) Industry, which includes almost all companies in the â€Å"fast food† industry. Our goal in this report is to use various tools to analyze KKD and recommend strategies for them to gain more competitive advantage in the market.First, we will observe the operational characteristics of KKD. These factors will show positive indications of growth in Krispy Kreme. We will look at how many stores they have currently, how many they are planning to add (in the U. S and internationally), and the training and technology that differentiates them from others in the QSR ind ustry. We then will evaluate the performance metrics, such as inventory turnover and days of inventory ratios, to compare how KKD compares to their competition. In order to find out how efficient Krispy Kreme is operating, our group intends to dentify where the QSR is positioned according to the industry life cycle. SWOT ANALYSIS The following SWOT analysis is intended to examine KKD’s internal strengths and weaknesses so we can link them to external opportunities and threats with the aim of developing a strategy they should pursue. STRENGTHSStrengths are characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over other competitors. As a global org anization, KKD has become a household name as they’ve branched into grocery and convenience stores and made doughnuts readily accessible. KKD offers a product that cannot be matched by any competitors when referring to taste, freshness, and the finest ingredients. Their affordable, high-quality doughnuts create a strong visual appeal and â€Å"one-of-a-kind† taste. WEAKNESSES Weaknesses are characteristics that place the firm at a disadvantage relative to others.Some apparent weaknesses Krispy Kreme might have are: * Limited amount of â€Å"healthy† selections. * Limited menu: Lack Breakfast items. * Limited amount of non-snack food items. * Not innovative. * No major advertising: 100% reliance on reputation. * Opening additional locations but no focus on increasing cur rent store performance. * International differences/preferences. * Lack of knowledge of what the customer wants (demographics, psychographics, behavioral segmentation). OPPORTUNITIES Opportunities are elements that the company can exploit to its advantage.Most internationally located stores purchase their ingredients from local merchants rather than the Krispy Kreme Supply Chain. If KKD can find a cost effective way to provide these ingredients, they can capitalize on supply chain efficiencies to make a profit. Some opportunities for Krispy Kreme to leverage for growth would include: * Emerging markets and expansion abroad: International expansion has proven to bring better returns than expanding domestically. THREATS Threats to an organization are described as elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project. Some threats facing Krispy Kreme are: * Competition: Only 694 KKD stores compared to 10,000 Dunkin' Donuts and 20,000 Starbucks Increasing competition from large and small doughnut chains, Krispy Kreme market share erodes slightly in highly co mpetitive markets. * Price Wars: In the doughnut and pastry shop ndustry, price wars are generated in attempts to take away revenue from other restaurants and sustain growth. * Economic slowdown: External changes (government, politics, taxes, etc. ) * Ordering through the Internet: More and customers are ordering online, but Krispy Kreme does not offer online ordering of their donuts. They offer accessories online, such as coffee mugs and t-shirts. Dunkin Donuts offers more accessories including coffee, but no donuts. * Healthy food trends: Krispy Kreme must constantly be aware of substitute products from many different areas of the market place.Such substitutes demanded today include healthier menu items include zero trans fats in all products. INDUSTRY ANALYSIS Operational Characteristics Today, Krispy Kreme and its one-of-a-kind â€Å"Hot Light† which is a light that hangs inside the store window for people to know when the doughnuts have just come out of the oven. This â€Å"Hot Light† can be found in approximately 694 locations around the world and is in 234 locations in the United States.In 2002, KKD shipped their first international load of doughnut mix to Australia, and since then have added locations in over 20 countries. All KKD ingredients and store supplies are shipped from the company’s distribution warehouses in NC, IL, and CA. The KKD distribution center supplies all of the products needed to operate retail stores, from doughnut ingredients (mix, filling, glaze, sprinkles, etc. ) to cleaning supplies and uniforms. Production is done in the factory stores and completely automated, which cuts overhead costs and provides consistency in the products.KKD shops generally operate seven days a week, excluding some major holidays. Traditionally, domestic sales have been slower during the winter holiday season and the summer months. KKD opened five new company operated small r etail shops in fiscal 2012 and three new company-operated shops in fiscal 2011, all of which were hot shops. They plan to open five to ten small retail shops in fiscal 2013, consisting mainly of small factory stores, all in the Southeastern United States. In the past three years, they have opened 92 stores (See Figure II).The ability to accommodate a drive-thru window is an important characteristic in most new shop locations, including both factory stores and satellite shops. Of the 85 shops, which serve on-premises customers, 79 have a drive-thru. Traditional factory stores generally are located in freestanding suburban locations generally ranging in size from approximately 2,400 to 8,000 square feet. The average size is 3,000 square feet. The stores typically have the capacity to produce between 2,800 and 16,000 dozen doughnuts daily. KKD is also investing in more technology to support the business.In 2012, KKD purchased new point-of-sale hardware for all of the company stores and implemented a new computer hardware system for all company and franchisee locations. KKD encourages team members to be courteous, helpful, knowledgeable and attentive, focusing intently on employee training. High levels of customer service and the maintenance of quality standards are enforced by frequently monitoring stores through a variety of methods, including random quality audits, known as â€Å"mystery shoppers† and a toll-free consumer telephone number.KKD offers a comprehensive manager training program for every position in the store, covering the critical skills required to operate a Krispy Kreme store and a training program. The manager-training program includes classroom instruction, computer-based training modules and in-shop training. The main competitors for Krispy Kreme are other quick service restaurants, such as Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Panera Bread, and Einstein Noah Bagels. Performance Metrics A company can measure its minimum inventory investment by its inventory turnover.This is the level of customer demand satisfied by the supply on hand. The inventory turnover tells an organization how many times they sell through the entire inventory in one year. The average day’s supply of inventory that is on hand tells you how many days your current inventory will last based on your sales levels. If a company is short on inventory, the warehousing costs will be lower, but there’s a risk of running out. In order to figure these values you need to figure your average inventory and know your costs of goods sold for the year.For the past three years (since 2010) Krispy Kreme has an inventory turnover ratio of 21. 26. They have average days where inventory is 16. 89 (see figures III and IV). Industry Life Cycle Most businesses evolve from the introduction stage, to the growth stage, maturity, and decline. It is important to understand the evolution of the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) Industry that KKD competes in to accurately ass ess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats speeding or slowing the firm’s growth. The introduction stage is dominated by the marketing of an innovation for the first time.Competition is minimal and returns are negative, as most companies must catch up on their investments in R;D, marketing, and manufacturing. The growth stage is characterized by high profits and competition. During this stage organizations begin to differentiate their products based on value and quality. The maturity stage shows high sales accompanied by very strong price pressures. Profit margins often shrink as the customers begin to see the product as homogenous (always the same). The decline stage is shown by reduced profits and many companies have to decide whether to stay in the industry or cut their losses.Based on these key factors, we believe the QSR industry is in the maturity stage of the industry life cycle. This is due to a low level of innovation, fluctuating profit margins, and g lobal expansion. IV. RECOMMENDED STRATEGY Krispy Kreme must remain competitive in the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) Industry. To be effective at this we believe the first thing they should focus on cost leadership. Cost leadership is based on high volume sales of low margin products/services (i. e. Wal-Mart). To achieve this, KKD must focus on increasing their sales.This can be done by analyzing their target market’s key buying habits at the lowest cost to Krispy Kreme. Next, KKD should decrease their prices and adjust R;D, marketing and manufacturing to create a cost gap so they can save some money. KKD can leverage their economies of scale (complete automation of the doughnut making process, added capacity, and TQM) to create a long-term sustainable cost gap. We believe if KKD executives focus on cost leadership in the QSR industry, the company will benefit from increased revenues, retail operations, and increased interest in the brand name of Krispy Kreme.

He integrated faith in tauheed and the matter of his prophet hood together in one pronouncement Kalama (an Arabic verse) "there is no God but Allah and Mohammad is the prophet of Allah." So early Islam remained in constant war with pagans of Arabia during the life of Mohammad and a long after him. The pagans had coined their own gods to worship and they were ready to sacrifice every thing for the sake of their faith. Islam developed as an anti-thesis of polytheism of Arabia. Koran was mainly believed to preach tauheed, (the absolute monotheism) during the stay of prophet Mohammad in Mecca from 572 AD to 612 AD. Perhaps there was no other slogan stronger than this one (tauheed) that could break and reorganize the Arab society under single leadership that later integrated economy, politics, state and religion together. The prophet after having achieved the basic success ensured that the edifice of his religion strongly stands on the basis of tauheed. He gave in Koran various strong commandments of Allah regarding tauheed. Historically Islam and Christianity coexisted side by side. Islam accepted Christianity as divine religion and ordained Muslims to believe in the entire previous prophet and not to discriminate between them. Koran gave a whole chapter on the innocence and virginity of Mary and confirmed the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. Any one who did not believe in the prophet hood of Mary and Jesus was not accepted as a Muslim. However Koran gave the concept of lifting alive of Jesus to heavens by God and his resurrection before the Day of Judgment. Understanding how to use the group member’s strength will help to overcome the potential weaknesses. By using one group members strength for one task can allow another team member to use her strengths in other areas. Developing a professional development plan can help the team work together to get the job done. In evaluating the group member’s personality types, there are three dominate personalities considered â€Å"The Producer,† and one group member who is an interactive personality known as â€Å"The Impresser. † By having three dominate personalities, the team will have to make sure that the members are not all trying to take control of the situation and leading the group in three different ways. We will also have to make sure that we can delegate tasks to other group members to make sure we are not overwhelmed and making other members think their work is not good enough. The assessment of myself was spot on from the behavioral evaluation. Even though I have worked hard not coming across so blunt to people and understanding that people have their own way of getting the job done. I am a person who sometimes does not like to express my feeling and just want to get the job done. I am a person who likes to get large tasks accomplished in a short amount of time to have the achievement of accomplishment. I do like to finish a task from start to finish, and it bothers me if I have to jump to another task before I am finished. I am a fast-paced person and can change my pace depending on if the business picks up. Possessing a dominate personality also has its downfalls. Dominate personalities can be stubborn, impatient, and tough. Sometimes this can be an issue when I become close-minded to others ideas and impatient with other group members. Dominate personalities like to be in control and do not want to lose that control. I will have to say this is  an issue that I need to work on. I do not like losing control and when I do analysis how I could have changed it instead of letting go of the situation. Another area that dominate personalities do not handle well is d ealing with feelings. I have had to overcome this over the years and learn that sometimes I may not mean to come across harsh, but to some people it can come across that way. I have learned that I have to take into consideration the person I am dealing with and make sure I take the group members feelings into consideration before speaking. Dominate personality types also have to understand that we will not always prevail on every issue that comes up. The section of the assessment that was very interesting but also very true was how dominate personalities react under stress. The assessment stated that dominate personality types are restless, critical, blunt, intrusive, uncooperative, irritable, aggressive, and pushy (Alessandra, 2013). I can see myself going through these behaviors when I am stressed and understand why it is important not to take things out on others and that the situation will get resolved even if I am not in control of it. Another area that was interesting was how to reduce conflict. The section that stated their anger is directed at the situation and the lack of desired results (Alessandra, 2013). These outbursts and behaviors may appea r to be personal attacks when they are not meant to (Alessandra, 2013). I have had this happen a few times when I am speaking with my husband, and he always thinks I am mad at him instead. I have to learn to state I am stress over the situation and not make people think I am blaming them. In evaluating the other team member’s personality type, one member is considered to be the interactive style. The interactive personality style actions are spontaneous, dislike working alone, work quickly and excitedly with others, and have good persuasive skills (Alessandra, 2013). Some weaknesses for the interactive style is that they can be disorganized, careless, exaggerates, and poor follow-through (Alessandra, 2013). The interactive personality type main focus is people and dominate personality type are goal focused. Interactive personality types like to brainstorm and interact with colleagues. Dominate personalities like to work alone to make sure the task is completed. They also like freedom from control and like to have the chance to influence or motivat e others. Dominate personalities like to be in control and strive for results. The interactive personality type can  express anger as a general response to a personal attack on them. Interactive personalities tend to be more emotional that dominate personality types. Dominate and interactive personality types are direct and fast-paced people. We frequently us gestures and voices to emphasize our point, tend to be less patient and more competitive, frequently contribute to groups and can express opinions readily (Alessandra, 2013). Dominate personalities tend to be guarded and direct behaviors, whereas interactive personalities are direct and open behaviors. Even with both personality types preferring fast-paced work styles some tension may result based on that interactive personality’s emphasis is on people and dominate personality’s emphasis is on the goals. Some degree of tension is likely to result in our interactions because of the difference in priority (Alessandra, 2013). In evaluating the team’s personality types, we will have to make sure we are taking into consideration people and goals to get tasks accomplished. Both personality types like a fast-paced environment and can become impatient. The interactive personality type will help to contribute the emotional component need and the dominate personality will help to give order and structure in a timely manner. When working in a group each member must take into consideration that not every team member functions as another one may. If each team member can use each person’s strengths forward and whatever weaknesses come up can be benefited by another team member. La creatividad Introduccion La creatividad es la llave que abre la puerta del desarrollo individual y colectivo, razà ³n por la cual las naciones que han alcanzado un alto grado de desarrollo tecnolà ³gico, industrial, econà ³mico y social invierten grandes cantidades de recursos para mantenerse a la vanguardia, ya que innovar constantemente les asegura, no sà ³lo el bienestar de sus habitantes, sino incluso la supervivencia misma. Esta necesidad de ofrecer alternativas nuevas, viables y oportunas a las distintas problemà ¡ticas que plantea nuestra sociedad globalizada, nos motiva a enfocar nuestro interà ©s de estudio en la creatividad, desde la perspectiva del individuo creativo e innovador, pues es el sujeto, el principal protagonista de estos cambios, quien utiliza esta herramienta interna para aportar los elementos que promueven el avance y crecimiento. En este sentido, el presente trabajo de grado se propone â€Å"dibujar† el perfil psicolà ³gico de personas creativas en Repà ºblica Dominicana, a partir de la descripcià ³n de sus rasgos de personalidad. Igualmente nos esforzamos en entregar un perfil social, tomando como marco de referencia el universo relacional de los individuos estudiados: familiar, social, educativo y econà ³mico; con la finalidad de encontrar en estas perspectivas externas los elementos o situaciones que facilitaron la manifestacià ³n concreta de su actividad creativa, asà ­ como aquellas circunstancias que representaron importantes obstà ¡culos en la consecucià ³n de sus metas. Esta investigacià ³n es el primer estudio de este gà ©nero realizado en nuestro paà ­s, hecho que le reviste de gran importancia ya que las conclusiones arribadas aportarà ¡n valiosos beneficios en diferentes à ¡reas. Este estudio abarca diversas zonas de nuestra geografà ­a nacional, donde nuestros sujetos de investigacià ³n han expuesto parte de sus talentos. Mediante pruebas psicomà ©tricas realizamos la exploracià ³n caracterolà ³gica, mientras que el perfil contextual es abordado a travà ©s del uso de cuestionarios y entrevistas semi II estructuradas. Indagamos asà ­ el ambiente que fue capaz de impulsar, aunque no de propiciar, el genio creativo de estos ciudadanos como mecanismo de adaptacià ³n y supervivencia a sus propias carencias. Iniciamos esta propuesta investigativa definiendo el concepto creatividad y sus antecedentes, exponiendo las teorà ­as planteadas por diferentes personalidades del haber cientà ­fico; quienes, a pesar de estudiarla desde diferentes aristas, coinciden en afirman que la creatividad es una capacidad integral de todos los seres humanos, incluso hay quienes la califican como una â€Å"actitud personal†; este potencial lo que requiere es ser fertilizado, a fin de broten sus frutos en todos los à ³rdenes. En el capà ­tulo uno, definimos las personas creativas desde la à ³ptica de diversos investigadores, a partir de una serie de caracterà ­sticas cognoscitivas, afectivas y volitivas especà ­ficas que poseen. De igual modo las perfilamos mediante su auto descripcià ³n. Es de nuestro interà ©s abordar la motivacià ³n tanto intrà ­nseca como extrà ­nseca que impulsan sus proyectos creativos, pues estas personalidades sobresalen mà ¡s por su deseo de dejar huellas en el mundo que por su puro poder intelectual. Sin dejar de lado el aspecto de la inteligencia, ya que hay autores que incluso la desvinculan del proceso creativo.. En el capitulo dos nos ocupamos del contexto creativo tratando de exponer el papel que juega el proceso de socializacion en el desarrollo y expresià ³n de la capacidad creativa. Los estudios de casos realizados nos permiten concluir que las caracterà ­sticas que definen los sujetos estudiados son las siguientes†¦ III II. PLANTEAMIENTO DEL PROBLEMA II.1 ENUNCIACIÓN DEL PROBLEMA De los individuos creativos depende el desarrollo y sostenimiento del progreso humano, gracias a la incorporacià ³n de sus ideas originales, innovadoras y eficaces. Por lo tanto, es imprescindible detectar y cultivar las cualidades de personalidad que los caracterizan. De ahà ­ la relevancia que alcanza la presente investigacià ³n, pues entregamos un perfil psicolà ³gico y social de personas creativas en Repà ºblica Dominicana, estudio pionero en su gà ©nero. La creatividad es considerada un bien social, pues el avance de la sociedad dependerà ¡ cada vez mà ¡s de la inventiva y de la capacidad de las jà ³venes generaciones1. En los à ºltimos 50 aà ±os, ha sido estudiada por muchos autores como elemento componente de la personalidad (Guilford, 1960; Sternberg, 1988; Mitjà ¡ns, 1995; Csikszentmihalyi, 1998; Goà ±i, 2003). El procedimiento utilizado consiste en identificar las personas creadoras a partir de sus realizaciones o utilizando criterios de jueces, datos autobiogr à ¡ficos, etc. y estudiar, generalmente mediante tests, los rasgos de personalidad, buscando relaciones que evidencien cuà ¡les caracterizan a las personas creadoras y las distinguen de las no creadoras.2 Tradicionalmente las investigaciones han sido enfocadas en poblaciones especà ­ficas: cientà ­ficos y artistas de todo gà ©nero; llegando incluso a considerar la creatividad como una propiedad cuasi exclusiva de estos grupos; sin embargo hay autores que la plantean como un atributo comà ºn a todos los seres humanos, distinguiendola como ordinaria, cuando el individuo la utiliza en su cotidianidad para adaptarse al medio y sobrevivir, y grandiosa cuando es responsable de los logros y progresos de la sociedad humana.3 En un principio el estudio de la creatividad se limitaba al contexto individual, posteriormente se han tenido en consideracià ³n tambià ©n otros factores de carà ¡cter 1 Saturnino De la Torre. Plaza y Valdà ©s Editores. 2007, p. 46 IV social, que forman parte del escenario en el que se desenvuelve el individuo: la familia, la red social, el ambiente cultural y educativo, los adelantos tecnolà ³gicos de la à ©poca, etc. Anne Roe, una de las pioneras de la psicologà ­a moderna, considera que a veces las instituciones culturales y el ambiente reprimen el potencial creativo en vez de estimularlo. â€Å"El problema no es sà ³lo encontrar la gente que de algà ºn modo han logrado oponerse a estas presiones, sino tambià ©n el encontrar formas de cambiar la cultura†.4 II.2 FORMULACIÓN DEL PROBLEMA Estos à ¡ngulos de acercamiento y comprensià ³n de la creatividad en la relacià ³n individuo-entorno, nos llevan a formular las siguientes preguntas:  ¿Cuà ¡les carà ¡cterà ­sticas de personalidad predominan en las personas creativas?  ¿Cuà ¡les rasgos de carà ¡cter comparten los individuos estudiados?  ¿Cà ³mo se definen asà ­ mismos los creativos? (autoconcepto)  ¿Cuà ¡les factores de carà ¡cter interno y/o externo lo motivan a crear?  ¿En quà © ambiente familiar se desarrollà ³ como individuo?  ¿Cuà ¡l es la red social que le ha servido de apoyo en sus proyectos?  ¿Cuà ¡l es el nivel de escolaridad alcanzado?  ¿Cuà ¡les circunstancias econà ³micas han sido predominantes a lo largo de su vida?  ¿Proporciona nuestra sociedad (Repà ºblica Dominicana) el ambiente propicio para el desarrollo y exposicià ³n del potencial creativo en sus ciudadanos? 4 Alexandra Goà ±i. JUSTIFICACIÓN Identificar y describir a las personas creativas a partir de sus rasgos de personalidad, asà ­ como la relacià ³n que ha tenido el contexto familiar, social, econà ³mico y educacional con la expresià ³n y realizacià ³n creativa de los mismos, constituye un campo de investigacià ³n hasta ahora no explorado en Repà ºblica Dominicana, de ahà ­ se desprende la relevancia de este estudio, resultando à ©ste el primer abordaje de esta temà ¡tica en nuestro paà ­s. Las conclusiones arribadas reportan importantes beneficios en los siguientes tà ©rminos: Psicolà ³gicos: proporcionan un inventario caracterolà ³gico de los sujetos creativos estudiados, el cual se podrà ¡ utilizar para futuras investiga- ciones que amplà ­en el espectro de estudio de la creatividad y la influencia del ambiente en la produccià ³n creativa. De igual modo, motiva a los estudiosos del comportamiento a fijar su interà ©s en las potencialidades humanas, cà ³mo descubrirlas y fomentarlas, mà ¡s que en las patologà ­as manifiestas en la conducta. Educativos: el manejo de esta informacià ³n nos permite rediseà ±ar la enseà ±anza, a fin de que à ©sta promueva y fomente dichas cualidades de personalidad en las futuras generaciones. Gracias a esta reorientacià ³n podremos contar con individuos capaces de generar nuevas propuestas y de producir los cambios que necesita nuestra sociedad para asegurar la ruta hacia el desarrollo sostenido, rompiendo el esquema de que los estudiantes sean simples acumuladores y repetidores de informacià ³n que otros han aportado. Esta revolucià ³n educativa convertirà ¡ los salones de clase en verdaderos centros de formacià ³n de là ­deres emprendedores, al permitirseles la expresià ³n de su libre pensamiento y la concrecià ³n de sus ideas. VI Sociales: evaluar el contexto familiar, social y econà ³mico nos permite inferir cuà ¡les circunstancias externas han sido proveedoras de està ­mulos y cuà ¡les han sido inhibidoras del talento creativo. Este es uno de los aspectos mà ¡s importartes a considerar, ya que el individuo, como ente biopsicosocial, trae una dotacià ³n biolà ³gica que le antepone y supone la expresià ³n de sus cualidades, sin embargo no escapa a la externalidad: es en el ambiente que lo circunda donde ha de expresar estas virtudes, siempre y cuando este entorno le sea favorable. Es una constante en esta investigacià ³n la reflexià ³n respecto a este punto. Culturales: Aunque somos considerados paà ­s â€Å"tercermundista†, pueblo en và ­a de un desarrollo que no acabamos de alcanzar, en nuestro territorio se han formado y expresado indviduos con alta capacidad creativa, aà ºn cuando las circunstancias les han sido adversas. Este ejemplo, enseà ±a a la presente y futura generacià ³n a cultivar l a autoconfianza y trascender las limitaciones que impone el espacio que nos rodea. Promovemos asà ­ la cultura de la autodeterminacià ³n de nuestra nacià ³n. Empresariales. En este à ¡mbito, el perfil caracterolà ³gico del creativo ayuda a identificar aquellos individuos con iniciativa, inventiva, capaces de generar las ideas innovadoras a mayor ritmo, asegurando el progreso y el desarrollo en tà ©rminos productivos. Incluso hay sociedades, como la japonesa, donde ser creativos es una verdadera obligacià ³n del empleado. Esta investigacià ³n es viable pues se dispone de los recursos necesarios para su realizacià ³n. VII IV. ALCANCE Y Là MITES DE LA INVESTIGACIÓN Este estudio de caso se llevarà ¡ a cabo durante los meses agosto-octubre del aà ±o 2009; està ¡ limitado a estudiar seis personas dedicadas a diversas actividades, con diferentes niveles educativos, cuyas edades oscilan entre los 20 y 55 aà ±os de edad, las cuales està ¡n ubicadas en diversas localidades de nuestro paà ­s (Repà ºblica Dominicana). VIII V. OBJETIVOS V.1 GENERAL Describir el perfil psicosocial de personas creativas en Repà ºblica Dominicana, dedicadas a diversas ramas tà ©cnicas y artisticas, cuyas edades oscilas entre 20 y 55 aà ±os de edad. V.2 ESPECà FICOS Identificar los rasgos de personalidad de estas personas creativas Establecer un perfil caracterolà ³gico del creativo Exponer cà ³mo se describen a sà ­ mismos (autoconcepto) Establecer la relacià ³n del entorno social y familiar en el desarrollo y expresià ³n del talento creativo de estos personajes Exponer la formacià ³n acadà ©mica de los casos estudiados Identificar las circusntancias econà ³mica en las cuales se han desenvuelto Investigar las motivaciones intrà ­nsecas y extrà ­nsecas de sus creaciones IX VI. METODOLOGà A VI.1 TIPO DE INVESTIGACIÓN La presente investigacià ³n se define como un estudio de caso, enmarcado en el enfoque cualitativo, fundamentado en una perspectiva interpretativa de los datos recolectados. VI.2 TIPO DE ESTUDIO Realizamos un estudio descriptivo, debido a que nuestro objetivo principal es describir al individuo a partir de sus rasgos de personalidad, haciendo à ©nfasis en comprender la relacià ³n de su expresià ³n creativa con el ambiente que lo circunda, ya sea en tà ©rminos familiares, sociales, educacionales y econà ³micos. Es asà ­ mismo un estudio exploratorio, ya que esta temà ¡tica es planteada por vez primera en nuestro paà ­s como objeto de investigacià ³n, constituyà ©ndose asà ­ en un punto de partida para estudios posteriores. VI.3 MUESTRA La muestra estuvo conformada por seis personas, cuatro hombres y dos mujeres, dedicadas a distintas ramas u oficios, con diferentes niveles educativos, cuyas edades oscilan entre 20 y 50 aà ±os de edad. El criterio de seleccià ³n està ¡ basado en el conocimiento previo del aporte realizado y desarrollado por las personas en cuestià ³n. Los mismos està ¡n localizados en diferentes ciudades de nuestro paà ­s. (Aà ±adir el carà ¡cter sujetivo de la seleccià ³n, explicar esto.) X VI.4 TÉCNICA DE RECOLECCIÓN DE DATOS Para el logro del objetivo se utilizaron los siguientes instrumentos: a. El Test de 16 Factores de Personalidad de Raymond B. Catell (16 FP de Catell), el cual se basa en el anà ¡lisis factorial y mide 16 dimensiones de la personalidad. Cada uno de los factores posee un significado psicolà ³gico segà ºn el cual ha de interpretarse la calificacià ³n obtenida por el sujeto para su perfil de personalidad. b. Entrevistas semi-estructuradas mediante las cuales exploramos la relacià ³n persona-ambiente en sus diferentes vertientes: social, familiar, econà ³mica y educativa. Francis Barron VII.1 ANTECEDENTES HISTÓRICOS DE LA INVESTIGACIÓN VII.1.1 LA CREATIVIDAD La creatividad està ¡ vinculada a todos los aspectos de la vida psicolà ³gica y social, cuyo abordaje requiere un tratamiento interdisciplinario. Es el tema central de investigacià ³n de cientà ­ficos, psicà ³logos, educadores, filà ³sofos, etc., ya que representa el factor competitivo mà ¡s determinante y sustentador de los grandes cambios que experimenta la sociedad del siglo XXI. VII.1.1.1 Definicià ³n Creatividad significa crear; implica dar vida o sentido a algo nuevo, construir, hacer crecer (en latà ­n crescere), desarrollar, aportar un sentido diferente en la solucià ³n de problemas, orientado a satisfacer los requerimientos de la sociedad en tà ©rminos constructivos. La creatividad no es sà ³lo un proceso personal de satisfaccià ³n de necesidades, sino tiene una dimensià ³n social, pues es en el contexto externo donde ha de tener repercusià ³n el resultado del proceso creativo: el producto creado. VII.1.1.2 Antecedes histà ³ricos del tà ©rmino En 1971 la Real Academia de la Lengua discutià ³ acerca de la incorporacià ³n de la palabra creatividad al diccionario de la lengua espaà ±ola, pues consideraban XII injustificable la utilizacià ³n de un anglicismo (â€Å"creativity†) cuyo significado, a juicio de los acadà ©micos de la à ©poca, era ambiguo y polisà ©mico, argumentando ademà ¡s que existà ­an otras palabras que tenà ­an significados similares. Esta anà ©cdota de carà ¡cter histà ³rico nos muestra el vertiginoso crecimiento que ha tenido un concepto que en sà ³lo tres dà ©cadas se ha transformado en una herramienta inseparable del desarrollo y de la actividad cientà ­fica, tecnolà ³gica, cultural y educativa de nuestros pueblos.5 El reconocimiento del tà ©rmino creatividad, como elemento activo en todo ser humano, ha recorrido un largo camino, en el que podemos seà ±alar las siguientes etapas: Edad Antigua: el artista no crea, sino que se limitaba a imitar la realidad; Edad Media y la Moderna Cristiana: el acto de crear era solamente atribuible a Dios. Siglo XIX: el tà ©rmino creador es sinà ³nimo de artista. 1950: este aà ±o marca el inicio de la investigacià ³n cientà ­fica de la creatividad como una capacidad intrà ­nseca humana. En esta à ºltima etapa se destaca el psicà ³logo Joy Paul Guilford, quien incorpora el tà ©rmino creatividad al vocabulario habitual de la psicologà ­a al pronunciar su conferencia Creativity ante la American Psychological Association en 1950, marcando con este hecho un antes y un despuà ©s en la investigacià ³n cientà ­fica sobre esta cuestià ³n. Aunque regularmente se considera a Francis Galton (1869), con su obra Hereditary genius, como el punto de partida al plantear el tema del carà ¡cter hereditario de los genios y creadores. Fue el primero en ocuparse de estudiar la personalidad creadora mediante un mà ©todo cientà ­fico, aunque hoy dà ­a no son sostenibles sus conclusiones. History of the Black Lives Matter Movement A Change Overdue Throughout history, protesting and standing up for a cause has been very common. It’s essentially a part of American history. However, some make bigger impacts than others.   Peter Katel states in his article titled Racial Conflict, â€Å"Three words — Black Lives Matter — have sparked a new argument over race in America. Demonstrators chanting and tweeting that slogan have protested the deaths of African-Americans, many of them unarmed, at the hands of police officers — most of them white — in cities across the country in the past two years.† (15) The Black Lives Matter movement has fueled the fire for the discussion of racial equality in America. Most people felt, before the rise of the movement, that this topic of discussion was not necessary to discuss. The idea was that racism was non-existent in America and was not as bad as previous years throughout history. The movement has become very controversial and has resulted in some changes regarding police procedures but also an increased amount of violence in the black community. There are differing moral and political opinions, therefore the issue has no resolution as of now. Opposition has always been a part of American politics, but it is believed that Donald Trump’s election has sparked a larger era of protests. In an article titled Citizen Protests Alan Greenblatt says, â€Å"Fueled by social media, demonstrations have arisen over Trump administration policies on such issues as health care, climate change and immigration. Meanwhile, alleged police brutality and the removal of Confederate monuments have aroused mass protests, some violent.† (1) The size of today’s protests is reminiscent of the many protests in American history and especially the civil rights movement of the 1960s. The United States was founded in an act of protest, a rebellion against British colonial power. The Revolutionary War was followed by protests, such as the Boston Tea Party in 1773.Greenblatt goes on to say, â€Å"There was no time in American history when all views could be aired without some restrictions†¦There have always been some views that so me people thought were so repugnant and dangerous that they couldnt be allowed to be heard.† (8) The recent opposition of Trump’s presidency and protests related to Black Lives Matter follows right along with the U. S’s history of mass demonstrations. Today’s racial tensions began in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. New attention was focused on dangers to black males in 2012 when a neighborhood watch volunteer kills black teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida. The slogan Black Lives Matter first showed up in media reports after the 2014 shooting of black teenager Michael Brown by Ferguson, Mo police officer Darren Wilson, resulting in Brown’s death. A series of mass demonstrations grew into the Black Lives Matter movement after multiple unarmed black men and boys were killed by police in New York City, Ohio, North Carolina, etc.   Criticism of the movement grew as African Americans became more violent towards police. Incidents include the December 2014 killing of two New York City officers and the September 2015 shooting of Houston Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth. This sparked a counter position labeled as Police Lives Matter. Today’s conflicts between police and African Americans have stimulated debate about the larger issue of race in America. Over the past three years, the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement has inspired protests across the country against police violence. Some were continual over several weeks and drew a massive, militarized response from law enforcement. Some cities who held these massive demonstrations include: Ferguson, Mo, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Baltimore, Maryland. Collier Meyerson stated in an article titled When Protesting Police Violence Puts you in the Crosshairs, â€Å"†¦SWAT teams equipped with tear gas, armored vehicles, and rifles patrolled the streets, and protesters were subject to mass arrests and police brutality. In Ferguson, 10 days of protesting led to 150 arrests—80 percent of them for failure to disperse. Nearly 200 protesters were arrested in Baton Rouge. In Baltimore, a group of aggrieved residents sued the city† (20). Advocates for the Black Lives Matter movement argue that the emergence of the movement is mainly due to the impacts that police brutality and injustice in America has had on people of color. The impact is not only emotional but psychological as well. Over the past two decades, the militarization of police forces has given black Americans more to fear. â€Å"With current technology, police killing of Black people is recorded for public scrutiny and consumption. Access to these videos has led to unprecedented public discourse on what constitutes brutality, its connections to White supremacy, and the consequences for Black lives† (Alang 662). After the terrorist’s attacks in 2001, because of the severity of the attack on the country, police resources increased massively. Police officers now are trained as if they are in the military and use military strategies to manage protesters. Poor treatment by law-enforcement officers has been a reality of African-American life since before the United States existed. Even after the success of the civil-rights movement, police brutality and discrimination in the criminal-justice system didn’t end, they just became hidden. Over the course of the past three years, the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement has inspired protests. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, Today, black men are six times more likely to be incarcerated than white men, and black women more than twice as likely as white women. Black men are three times more likely than white men to die at the hands of law enforcement. While advocates of the Black Lives Matter movement argue that the movement is a positive, productive way towards change that brings awareness to the racial tensions in America, opposers of the movement believe the movement promotes violence and is wrong and could even be classified as a hate group. Most opposers believe that both sides are to blame for the violence that comes from protests and rallies related to Black Lives Matter. Recently, Donald Trump stated that he agrees with the idea that both sides are to blame for violence. Trump’s election brought a new agenda for the movement’s opposers. Efforts were made to undo the things done during the Obama administration. The views of Trump brought on a debate from advocates and opposers of the Black Lives Matter movement. â€Å"As the 2016 presidential campaign unfolded, BLM activists gained a reputation for using disruption as a way to push the movement’s key issues† (McLain 13). The Black Lives Matter Movement has created a conversation within the country as well as across the world. â€Å"Black Lives Matter represents one of the most influential and controversial of the contemporary protests movements.   Much of the controversy is connected to misunderstanding, distorted portrayals, and attempts to discredit the movement† (Hoffman 596) Most minorities in America believe The Black Lives Matter movement should be recognized and challenged. During the civil rights movement, students protested and created movements like the Freedom Rides, people young and old marched on Washington, and many activists spoke out against injustice and locked arms with black men and women to demand change. In this era where racial tensions are at a high because of recent events, each of us should think about how we can effect change in all our communities and work to make it happen. It is time to speak up and speak out against injustice and wrong As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people. This novel is set in Harlem in New York City. The Grimes migrate to the North in search of new opportunities. Elizabeth bids goodbye to her aunt in Maryland and leaves with Richard. She arrives in New York with great expectations but she is sorely disappointed. "Here, in this great city where no one cared, where people might live in the same building for years and never speak to one another, she found herself, when Richard took her in his arms, on the edge of a steep place and down she rushed, on the descent uncaring, into the dreadful sea." New York is a big and bustling city but it is heartless. The only way Elizabeth and Richard make their existence meaningful is by visiting places of interest in the city on weekends. They go to the Central Park or the Museum of Natural history to take their mind off from the daily drudgery. John Grimes does the same when he has to escape out of his dingy quarters at Harlem. He climbs a hill nearby to view New York in all its majesty and imagines himself to be an influential figure in the city. From there he walks over to mid-town Manhattan and Central Park to get a feel of the city. John experiences a sense of freedom in all the places outside his home at Harlem. His house was "narrow and dirty; nothing could alter its dimensions, no labour could ever make it clean. Dirt was in the walls and the floorboards, and triumphed beneath the sink where roaches spawned; was in the fine ridges of the pots and pans, scoured daily, burnt black on the bottom, hanging above the store; was in the wall against which they hung, and revealed itself where the paint had cracked and leaned outward in stiff squares and fragments, the paper-thin underside webbed with black." In similar quarters live Florence and other Negroes like her. If they look out of their window, they can see "scraps of paper and frosty dust, and --- the hanging signs of stores and storefront churches." Anne was charge with adultery, witchcraft, and incest in which the jury found her guilty and was sentenced to death by beheadment.

Kathleen Norris' Dakota Kathleen Norris uses small town society to illustrate a much larger phenomenon that occurs in America: The obstruction of truth in the name of progress and patriotism. Norris makes an example of a small Dakota town, the old families ingrained in local society who act as somewhat of a censorship committee, silently fixing the past's blunders and bad dreams so not to discourage themselves or the younger generation: A good story is one that isn't demanding, that proceeds from A to B, and above all doesn't remind us of the bad times, the cardboard patches we used to wear in our shoes, the failed farms, the way people you love just up and die. It tells us instead that hard work and perseverance can overcome all obstacles; it tells lie after lie, and the happy ending is the happiest lie of all. (85) Norris mentions the "progress model" and "linear narrative" used in the telling of history. People in Dakota don't want to hear about the countless generations before them who also failed at farming, the once thriving town that are now abandoned completely. They don't want to hear about anybody who failed, or anything bad that happened at all unless things turned out OK in the end. People have a need to hear fixed history to give them a false sense of hope. Even though many of them know it's false, they're willing to accept the fable as truth before facing a painful past. The larger repercussions of this form of history, is that it misses out on the larger purpose of history. The most important part of history to be told truthfully is the bad part. Imagine our history glazing over Hitler as a crazy guy who acted alone, and forced everybody in Germany to go along with his plan. We need to hear the story that regular people were pulled into his mentality, that random Joe's were converted into Jew-hating murderers. Unfortunately, American history does have a habit of covering up its history for the sake of offering its younger generations a progress model.
